Short answer

A tubal dye test may be recommended during a female infertility evaluation when the clinician needs information about the uterine cavity and whether the fallopian tubes are open.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

What it examines
The uterine cavity and passage of contrast through the fallopian tubes.
Place in care
One component of a broader fertility assessment.
Planning
Timing and preparation are set by the clinic after reviewing your cycle and health history.

Its role in a fertility evaluation

Hysterosalpingography places contrast through the cervix and uses X-ray images to follow its path. The images can reveal the outline of the uterus and whether contrast moves through the tubes. This helps a fertility team consider tubal factors alongside ovulation, ovarian reserve, the uterus, and semen analysis.

The timing depends on your menstrual cycle, pregnancy status, symptoms, and the information already available from ultrasound or other tests. A tubal result is one part of decision-making; it does not by itself predict whether pregnancy will occur or select a single treatment for everyone.

Before and after the appointment

Tell the clinic about possible pregnancy, pelvic pain, fever, unusual discharge, prior pelvic infection or surgery, and any contrast allergy. Ask how to prepare, whether you can take your usual medicines, and what pain-relief plan is suitable. Follow the clinic’s instructions about the appointment and arrange support if you would prefer not to travel alone afterward.

Ask for a clear explanation of the images and the next step. Depending on the findings and the rest of the fertility assessment, follow-up may involve observation, further testing, or a discussion of fertility treatment options.

When to contact the clinic

After the procedure, contact the clinic promptly for fever, increasing pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, faintness, or foul-smelling discharge. Before the test, report symptoms that could indicate infection or a pregnancy possibility, as these can change the timing or suitability of the examination.

Why are you recommending this test now? What other fertility factors are being assessed? What could each possible result mean for our next decision? How will you manage pain and explain the findings?

Questions people ask

Is a tubal dye test the only fertility test I may need?

No. A fertility evaluation commonly considers ovulation, ovarian factors, the uterus, and sperm as well as the tubes.

Can the result change my treatment discussion?

Yes. The finding may help your clinician decide whether further assessment or a particular fertility pathway should be discussed.
