When is hormonal coil recommended for perimenopause?

Perimenopause can bring changing cycle length, heavier bleeding and unpredictable ovulation. A hormonal coil releases progestogen in the uterus, which can thin the womb lining and reduce menstrual bleeding. It prevents pregnancy but does not treat hot flushes, night sweats or mood changes by itself.

If systemic oestrogen is prescribed and you still have a womb, progestogen is usually needed to protect the lining. A clinician may discuss whether a hormonal coil can provide that part of treatment and how long it remains suitable for that purpose. It does not confirm that menopause has occurred.

Share your bleeding pattern, migraine history, blood pressure, medical conditions, medicines and pregnancy plans. Unexplained bleeding needs assessment before insertion. Ask about the fitting process, initial spotting, follow-up, thread checks and whether your coil will cover both contraception and womb-lining protection.

Get urgent help for very heavy bleeding with weakness or faintness, severe pelvic pain, fever, or a positive pregnancy test with pain. Contact a clinician promptly if bleeding becomes persistently troublesome, discharge is unusual, or the threads cannot be felt.

Ask whether you need contraception now, whether oestrogen is appropriate, how the coil would protect the womb lining, and when it should be replaced or reviewed.
