When is HER2-targeted therapy recommended for HER2-positive breast cancer?

HER2-positive means the cancer cells have increased HER2 signals identified by pathology testing. This result supports discussion of HER2-directed medicine, but it does not determine the entire plan on its own. The team weighs tumour size, lymph-node findings, spread, hormone receptors, previous treatment, heart health, and whether treatment is intended before surgery, after surgery, or for advanced disease.

Review the pathology report with your oncologist and ask whether the HER2 result is clear or needs confirmation. Bring a list of medicines and describe any history of heart disease or reduced heart function. Discuss the proposed sequence, infusion or tablet arrangements, monitoring, and how treatment will be adjusted if side effects interfere with daily activities.

During treatment, report new breathlessness, chest pain, racing heartbeat, faintness, swelling, fever, or severe diarrhoea to the care team. Emergency help is needed for collapse, severe breathing trouble, or facial swelling with difficulty breathing. Keep scheduled monitoring appointments even when you feel well, because some effects are first found on assessment.
