Short answer

An H. pylori breath test is recommended when a clinician needs to detect active infection or confirm that treatment has cleared it.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the test can show

Helicobacter pylori, also called H. pylori, is a stomach bacterium linked with inflammation and peptic ulcers. A person may have indigestion, upper abdominal discomfort, nausea, or no clear symptoms, so symptoms cannot establish infection by themselves. The breath test checks for activity from the bacterium after a test substance is taken. It can be used during an initial assessment or as a check after treatment.

How to prepare and follow up

Give the clinician a complete list of antibiotics, acid-reducing medicines, bismuth products, and supplements. These may need to be stopped for a specified period, but only follow an agreed plan. Follow instructions about food and drink before the appointment. If the result is positive, discuss the full treatment course and how to manage missed doses. A follow-up breath test may be scheduled after treatment has finished and enough time has passed for a reliable result.

Symptoms that should not wait

Get urgent medical help if you vomit blood, pass black stools, develop severe abdominal pain, faint, or cannot keep fluids down. Promptly arrange review for ongoing vomiting, unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, or symptoms that return after treatment.

Useful questions to ask

Ask what the test is investigating, which medicines affect it, and when to take your last dose. Clarify when results arrive, what treatment follows a positive result, and whether a repeat test will be needed.

Questions people ask

Does feeling better prove H. pylori has gone?

No. Symptoms can improve for other reasons, so your clinician may use a follow-up breath test to confirm clearance.

Can I take my usual medicines before the test?

Some medicines can affect the result. Give the clinic your medication list and follow its specific preparation instructions.
