When is growth scan recommended for twin and multiple pregnancy?

Ultrasound measurements estimate each baby’s size and show whether growth is following an expected pattern. The scan can also assess amniotic fluid, the position of each baby and blood flow through the umbilical cord or placenta when clinically needed. Comparing babies with one another helps the team notice a difference in growth that may need closer monitoring. The timing depends on whether the babies share a placenta, whether they have separate sacs, and what earlier scans show.

Keep every antenatal and ultrasound appointment, because the schedule is tailored to your pregnancy. Take the scan report to the next maternity review and ask which measurements are being followed for each baby. A growth scan does not replace checks of your blood pressure, symptoms or general wellbeing. If an appointment is difficult to attend, contact the maternity unit promptly so another plan can be arranged.

Contact your maternity unit urgently for vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe abdominal pain, severe headache or visual changes. Seek immediate assessment if one or more babies’ movements are noticeably reduced or changed after you have learned their usual pattern. Do not wait for the next growth scan when these symptoms occur.

Ask whether the babies share a placenta, how often scans are planned, and which findings would bring the next scan forward. You can also ask how each baby’s growth will be compared and who to call outside clinic hours.
