When is GP consultation recommended for tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, commonly causing a sore throat, pain on swallowing, swollen glands and fever. Viruses are a frequent cause, while some cases involve bacteria and need a different assessment. A GP can examine the throat, consider your wider symptoms and decide whether testing, prescription treatment or simple supportive care is appropriate.

Rest, drink fluids in small regular amounts and choose soft foods if swallowing hurts. Avoid smoking and close contact while you feel unwell, and wash your hands often. Use only medicines suitable for you and follow the label or a clinician's advice. Tell the GP if symptoms began suddenly, if you have had repeated episodes, or if you cannot keep fluids down.

Seek emergency help if you are struggling to breathe, cannot swallow saliva, are drooling, have rapidly increasing swelling in the throat or neck, or cannot open your mouth normally. Get prompt advice for severe one-sided throat pain, dehydration, confusion, or a rapidly worsening illness.
