When is GP consultation recommended for sinusitis?

Sinusitis can cause blocked or runny nose, pressure around the cheeks or forehead, reduced sense of smell, headache, cough and tiredness. A GP can assess whether the symptoms fit sinusitis, check for complications and consider other causes. Arrange an appointment if symptoms continue without improvement, return repeatedly, or make sleep, work or usual activities difficult. Assessment is also sensible if you have a weakened immune system or a condition that makes infections harder to manage.

Rest, drink fluids and avoid smoking or smoky air. Saline nasal rinses may help clear mucus; use clean water prepared as directed. A pharmacist can advise on suitable pain relief or nasal treatment, especially if you are pregnant or take other medicines. Note when symptoms began, whether they are improving, and any fever, facial swelling or changes in vision. This information helps the GP decide whether examination, testing or treatment is needed.

Seek urgent medical help for swelling or redness around an eye, vision changes, severe headache unlike your usual headaches, confusion, a stiff neck, marked drowsiness, or rapidly worsening illness. These signs can indicate infection beyond the sinuses and need prompt assessment rather than waiting for a routine appointment.
