When is GP consultation recommended for inguinal hernia?

An inguinal hernia occurs when tissue pushes through a weak area in the groin. The lump may become more noticeable with standing, coughing or straining and may reduce when you rest. A GP can examine the area and decide whether monitoring, imaging or a surgical opinion is suitable.

Even a painless bulge deserves assessment because symptoms can change. Mention previous abdominal operations, persistent constipation, heavy lifting at work, or activities that make the swelling uncomfortable.

Arrange a routine appointment for a new or recurring lump. Note when it appears, whether it disappears when you lie down, and what movements trigger discomfort. Avoid activities that clearly increase pain, and manage constipation without straining.

Do not forcefully push a painful or firm swelling back into place. Bring a list of medicines and explain whether the lump affects walking, work, exercise or sleep.

Seek urgent medical help if the lump becomes suddenly very painful, hard, tender, discoloured or cannot be moved back, especially with vomiting, abdominal swelling, fever or inability to pass stool or gas. These changes can signal trapped or obstructed tissue.

Ask whether the examination confirms an inguinal hernia, whether it is safe to watch it, and which activities to limit. Ask what symptoms should prompt urgent review and whether a surgical assessment is needed.
