When is GP consultation recommended for genital herpes?

Genital herpes can cause groups of blisters or open sores around the genitals, anus, or nearby skin. Burning, tingling, itching, pain when passing urine, and tender groin glands can occur. A first outbreak may feel more extensive than later episodes, but similar-looking sores can have other causes. A GP can examine the area, discuss sexual health, and decide whether a swab or other assessment is appropriate.

Arrange a prompt appointment if this is the first episode or if new sores are appearing. Avoid sexual contact while sores or blisters are present, and tell the clinician about recent partners, pregnancy, medicines, allergies, and when symptoms began. Keep the area clean and dry, wear loose clothing, and drink enough fluid if urination is uncomfortable. Do not apply unapproved creams to broken skin.

Seek urgent medical help if you cannot pass urine, have severe pain, feel very unwell, develop a severe headache or stiff neck, or have eye symptoms after touching a sore. If you are pregnant and notice genital sores or warning symptoms, contact your maternity or medical team promptly because timing can affect advice around delivery.
