When is GP consultation recommended for chronic sinusitis?

Chronic sinusitis, also called chronic rhinosinusitis, involves ongoing inflammation in the nose and sinus passages. Symptoms may include congestion, drainage, facial pressure, reduced smell, cough from drainage, or an unpleasant taste. Allergies, nasal polyps, dental problems, irritants, and other nasal conditions can produce similar complaints, so symptom pattern and examination matter.

Write down which side feels blocked, whether symptoms change with seasons or dust, and whether smell has altered. Note facial or tooth pain, fever, cough, previous sinus treatment, allergies, and any nasal sprays or tablets you use. Saline rinsing may soothe symptoms when done with safe water and clean equipment; ask a pharmacist or GP if you are unsure which products suit you.

Seek urgent care for swelling or redness around an eye, vision changes, severe headache unlike your usual symptoms, stiff neck, confusion, marked facial swelling, or difficulty breathing. Prompt review is also needed if you are becoming very unwell or have a weakened immune system.

Ask whether allergies, polyps, dental disease, or another condition may be contributing, whether nasal treatment is suitable, and when an ear, nose, and throat referral or further assessment should be considered.
