When is GP consultation recommended for chronic cough?

A chronic cough can have several explanations, including asthma, allergies, reflux, post-nasal drainage, smoking or vaping, infection, or a medicine side effect. The sound of a cough alone cannot identify its cause. A GP may ask about triggers, phlegm, wheeze, heartburn, nasal symptoms, smoking, workplace exposures, and medicines before deciding whether tests or specialist input are needed.

Keep a short record of when the cough occurs and whether it is dry or produces phlegm. Note breathlessness, wheeze, fever, heartburn, nasal congestion, weight change, and possible triggers such as dust or exercise. Bring a list of medicines and describe smoking or vaping exposure. Avoid smoke and stay hydrated while waiting for assessment.

Get urgent help if coughing is accompanied by severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, chest pain, coughing blood, confusion, fainting, or rapidly worsening symptoms. A new cough with marked illness, or a cough in someone with serious lung or immune problems, also warrants prompt medical advice.

Ask what causes are being considered, whether you need a breathing test or chest assessment, which medicines could worsen the cough, and what symptom changes should lead you to seek help sooner.
