When is GP consultation recommended for chikungunya?

Short answer
Arrange a GP consultation for suspected chikungunya when fever and joint pain are significant, symptoms are not settling, or you need help distinguishing it from another infection.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the illness can involve
Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne viral illness. Fever can begin suddenly with marked joint pain, stiffness, headache, muscle aches, rash, or tiredness. Joint symptoms may continue after the fever improves. A GP can review the timing of symptoms, travel or mosquito exposure, hydration, medicines, and other possible causes of fever and joint pain.
What to do before the visit
Rest, drink fluids regularly, and record when the fever, rash, and joint symptoms began. Tell the clinician about recent travel, mosquito bites, pregnancy, long-term conditions, and medicines. Avoid taking aspirin or anti-inflammatory pain medicine until dengue has been considered, because the two illnesses can overlap and bleeding risk may matter. Use only medicines suitable for you and follow the label or a clinician's advice.
When care is urgent
Seek urgent medical care for trouble breathing, confusion, fainting, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, unusual bleeding, severe abdominal pain, or a seizure. Infants, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with significant medical conditions should seek advice promptly when fever follows possible mosquito exposure.
Useful questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit chikungunya or another infection, whether testing is appropriate, which pain medicines are suitable, how to protect others from mosquito bites, and what changes should prompt a return visit.
