When is genetic carrier screening recommended for thalassaemia carrier?

Short answer
Genetic carrier screening is recommended before pregnancy or early in pregnancy when thalassaemia trait is known, a partner is a carrier, or family history suggests inherited blood risk.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Useful tests
- Blood count, haemoglobin analysis, and sometimes gene testing
- Planning point
- Both partners' results matter
What thalassaemia trait means
A carrier may have small red blood cells or mild anaemia, but iron deficiency and thalassaemia trait are not interchangeable. If both parents carry relevant variants, a child may inherit a more serious thalassaemia disorder. Blood counts and haemoglobin analysis may guide whether molecular testing is needed.
Steps before another pregnancy
Tell your clinician about a prior label of thalassaemia minor, unexplained anaemia, or relatives with transfusion-dependent blood disease. Do not start iron solely because of a low blood count until iron status has been checked. If one partner is a carrier, testing the other partner gives a clearer picture of reproductive risk.
When to arrange review
Book preconception counselling when possible, or contact the maternity team early after pregnancy is confirmed. Seek prompt medical care for marked breathlessness, chest discomfort, fainting, or severe weakness. These symptoms need assessment for anaemia or another condition rather than being assumed to reflect carrier status.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether my result indicates alpha or beta thalassaemia, whether my partner needs haemoglobin testing, and whether iron studies are appropriate. Ask how confirmed results could affect prenatal testing and who can provide genetic counselling.

Questions people ask
Can iron treat thalassaemia trait?
Iron helps only when iron deficiency is present; testing should guide treatment.
Why test a partner who feels well?
Carrier status can cause few symptoms, yet the combined results may affect a child's inherited risk.
