When Is Fractional Laser Treatment Recommended for Burn Scars?

A fractional laser creates a pattern of microscopic treatment zones while leaving nearby skin available for healing. In a burn scar, this controlled remodeling may soften uneven texture, improve flexibility, and make the scar less noticeable over a course of treatment. It does not erase the original injury or restore skin exactly to its previous state.

Timing and device choice depend on whether the wound is closed, the scar is still changing, its depth and location, skin tone, and any history of unusual scar response. Active infection, open areas, or uncontrolled inflammation need attention before cosmetic resurfacing is considered.

Have the scar examined by a dermatologist or scar specialist. Discuss tightness across a joint, restricted movement, itching, pigment changes, previous procedures, and medicines that affect healing.

Follow the preparation and aftercare instructions closely. Protect the treated area from sunlight, keep it clean as directed, avoid picking, and attend planned reviews. A clinician may recommend staged sessions or combine laser with scar massage, silicone, injections, or physical therapy when those address a different part of the problem.
