What the operation does

Muscles, nerves and blood vessels can swell inside a tight covering called fascia. Rising pressure reduces circulation and may injure tissue. During fasciotomy, a surgeon opens the fascia to release pressure. The wound may need later care or delayed closure while swelling settles. This is different from exertional symptoms that improve with rest, which require specialist assessment rather than assuming emergency compartment syndrome.

What to do

Acute compartment syndrome is an emergency: go to an emergency department immediately for severe pain that seems out of proportion to an injury, pain when the limb is gently stretched, increasing tightness, numbness or weakness. Do not wait for home treatment to settle these symptoms. The team may examine the limb, measure pressure when needed and decide rapidly about surgery.

When to seek care promptly

Call emergency services or attend emergency care for rapidly increasing limb pain and swelling, a pale or cold foot or hand, new numbness, inability to move the limb, or symptoms after a fracture, crush injury, tight cast or surgery. A normal-looking pulse does not safely rule out the problem, so worsening symptoms still need immediate review.
