When Is Emollient Therapy Recommended for Pityriasis Alba?

Pityriasis alba often appears as lighter, faintly scaly patches on a child's face, especially the cheeks, and can also affect the neck or arms. The colour difference may stand out more after tanning, while the patches themselves may have little discomfort. An emollient smooths the dry surface; it does not immediately restore pigment.

Apply a bland, fragrance-free emollient to the patches after washing and whenever the skin feels dry. Use gentle cleansing, avoid rubbing or picking, and protect exposed skin from strong sun with shade, clothing, and age-appropriate sunscreen. The surrounding skin may tan while the patch remains lighter, so sun protection can reduce the visual contrast.

See a clinician if patches are sharply white, spreading quickly, completely smooth without scale, itchy, painful, or associated with hair or nail changes. Seek review when the diagnosis is uncertain or the appearance is causing concern, since fungal infection, vitiligo, and eczema can resemble pale facial patches.

Ask whether the patches fit pityriasis alba, which moisturiser is suitable for the child, and whether any anti-inflammatory treatment is appropriate for persistent redness or itch.
