When is emollient therapy recommended for hand eczema?

Hand eczema may cause dry scaling, redness, soreness, fissures, or itch. Water, detergents, solvents, gloves, and repeated wet work can keep the skin irritated. Emollients replace some surface oils and reduce water loss, helping the skin feel less tight. They do not identify or remove a contact allergy, and moderate or severe inflammation may need a prescribed anti-inflammatory treatment as well.

Apply emollient after washing and drying, including around the fingers and on the backs of the hands. Use enough to cover the affected skin without vigorous rubbing over cracks. Choose a fragrance-free product that feels practical for daytime use, and use a thicker preparation at times advised by your clinician. Wear suitable protective gloves for wet or chemical tasks, while allowing sweaty hands to dry when possible.

Seek medical advice if cracks are deep, bleeding, increasingly painful, or interfering with sleep or work. Pus, spreading redness, warmth, swelling, or fever can indicate infection and needs prompt assessment. Arrange a review when the rash keeps returning despite barrier care, because identifying an irritant or allergy may be needed to control it.
