When Is Cyst Removal Recommended for a Skin Cyst?

An epidermoid cyst is a sac under the skin that can contain keratin, a thick skin protein. A quiet, small cyst may only need observation. Removal becomes more reasonable when pressure, friction, tenderness, odour, or recurrent inflammation affects you. Complete removal of the cyst wall is often discussed because leaving that lining behind can allow the lump to return. If the area is acutely inflamed, a clinician may first calm the inflammation or drain it, then consider a later procedure.

Do not squeeze, pierce, or cut the lump at home; this can push material deeper and irritate the surrounding skin. Arrange an examination if the diagnosis is uncertain or the lump has changed. Mention previous drainage, medicines that affect bleeding, allergies, and any tendency to form raised scars. After removal, keep the dressing and wound care routine as instructed. Avoid rubbing the site and attend any planned wound review so healing can be checked.

Seek prompt care if the lump becomes rapidly more painful, hot, swollen, or red, releases pus, or is accompanied by fever or feeling unwell. A new or changing lump also deserves examination rather than self-treatment. After a procedure, call the clinic for spreading redness, increasing pain, persistent bleeding, wound separation, or cloudy discharge.
