When is cortisone injection recommended for trigger finger?

Trigger finger happens when a finger flexor tendon does not glide smoothly through its pulley near the palm. Swelling can produce tenderness, clicking, catching, or a finger that locks in a bent position. Cortisone is placed around the irritated tendon sheath to reduce swelling and improve gliding. It does not force a locked finger open, and another cause of stiffness or pain must be considered if the examination does not fit.

Arrange an assessment if symptoms interfere with gripping, sleep, work, or straightening the finger. Ask about activity changes, night support, hand exercises, and pain relief while deciding whether an injection fits. Tell the clinician about diabetes, infection, skin problems, allergies, medicines, and previous injections. Afterward, use the hand as advised and avoid repeatedly provoking the catching while the finger settles. Persistent locking needs follow-up rather than forceful manipulation.

Seek prompt care if the finger becomes suddenly stuck after injury, turns pale or blue, loses sensation, or develops marked swelling with fever. Following an injection, contact a clinician urgently for spreading redness, drainage, fever, or rapidly worsening pain. A finger that remains locked or becomes harder to straighten should be reviewed.
