When is clinical trials recommended for breast cancer?

Clinical trials can test a new medicine, a new combination, a different treatment sequence, a supportive-care approach or a way to improve diagnosis and follow-up. Some are for newly diagnosed breast cancer, while others are for cancer that has returned or spread. Eligibility may depend on hormone-receptor and HER2 results, genetic or molecular findings, stage, measurable disease, previous treatments, organ function and age.

A trial does not mean that standard care is unavailable. The research team should explain the purpose, visits, tests, possible benefits, known and uncertain risks, and alternatives. Participation is voluntary. You can ask questions before signing consent and can discuss leaving later with the treating team.

Ask your breast cancer team to search for trials that fit your diagnosis and treatment history. Bring pathology reports, scan results, medication details and a record of prior therapies. Clarify whether the trial treatment is compared with standard care, how assignment works, where visits occur, and who pays for trial-related care. Consider a second oncology opinion if eligibility or timing is unclear.

Before joining, report new symptoms so the team can decide whether assessment should come first. During a trial, contact the study team promptly for fever, breathing difficulty, severe rash, chest pain, persistent vomiting, confusion or any rapidly worsening symptom. Use emergency services for severe breathing trouble, collapse or new neurological symptoms.
