When is chemotherapy recommended for non-Hodgkin lymphoma?

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma includes different diseases, so treatment is not chosen from the name alone. The team considers biopsy findings, scans, blood tests, the areas involved and how quickly the lymphoma is behaving. Chemotherapy medicines travel through the bloodstream and can reach lymphoma cells in several parts of the body. It may be given alone or combined with antibody treatment, targeted medicine, radiotherapy or a stem-cell treatment plan. Some slow-growing lymphomas without troublesome symptoms can be monitored before treatment, while faster-growing or symptomatic disease often needs prompt therapy.

Ask the haematology team to explain the lymphoma subtype and whether treatment is intended to control symptoms, reduce the lymphoma before another treatment, or aim for remission. Before starting, discuss the proposed medicines, schedule, blood-count monitoring, infection precautions, fertility considerations and medicines or supplements you already take. Report fever, new symptoms or difficulty eating and drinking during treatment, because the team may need to assess you quickly.

Seek urgent medical help for a high temperature or chills during chemotherapy, sudden breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, fainting, uncontrolled bleeding, or inability to keep fluids down. Contact the treatment team promptly for worsening swelling, severe weakness, mouth sores that prevent drinking, or new pain. These symptoms can reflect infection, dehydration, treatment effects or lymphoma-related problems and should not wait for the next appointment.
