When is chemotherapy recommended for lymphoma?

Lymphoma is not one condition, so treatment varies between Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin subtypes and their specific cell features. The team considers the biopsy, scan findings, symptoms, pace of growth, blood tests and general health. Some slow-growing lymphomas can be observed when they are not causing problems, while active or faster-growing disease may need treatment. Chemotherapy can be combined with an antibody, immunotherapy, radiotherapy or a stem cell transplant, and the chosen medicines depend on the subtype and treatment goal.

Ask the haematologist to name your lymphoma subtype and explain why treatment is recommended now. Discuss whether additional biopsy or cell testing is needed, how response will be checked, and whether fertility preservation, infection protection or a central line is relevant. Keep appointments for blood tests, report side effects early, and check before taking supplements or non-prescribed medicines.

Contact the treatment team promptly for fever, chills, a new cough, breathlessness, unusual bleeding, severe diarrhoea, persistent vomiting, confusion, or rapidly increasing swelling. If you have severe breathing difficulty, collapse, or uncontrolled bleeding, call emergency services. Lymphoma and its treatment can affect immunity, blood counts and organs, so new symptoms need timely assessment.
