When is chemotherapy recommended for lung cancer?

The decision depends on whether the tumour is small-cell or non-small-cell lung cancer, its stage, scan findings, molecular test results, and your breathing, kidney, liver and heart health. Chemotherapy may be combined with radiotherapy for a locally advanced tumour, given before or after surgery, or used with immunotherapy or targeted medicine when cancer has spread. The team balances the expected benefit with side effects and your priorities. Treatment may be adjusted when scans, blood tests or symptoms show a different response.

Ask whether tissue testing has identified changes that could guide targeted treatment and whether chemotherapy is intended to cure, reduce recurrence risk, or control symptoms. Review lung function, other illnesses, smoking support, medicines, dental care and vaccination advice. Plan transport and help for treatment days, keep a symptom record, and tell the team about breathlessness, numbness, appetite changes or fever.

Call your cancer team urgently for new or worsening breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, fever, confusion, severe weakness, or an inability to drink. Sudden breathing difficulty, blue lips, collapse, or severe chest pressure needs emergency care. Do not wait for the next appointment when symptoms change rapidly.
