When is chemotherapy recommended for fallopian tube cancer?

After an operation, chemotherapy may target cancer cells that cannot be seen on scans. This is called treatment after surgery. If surgery needs to be delayed or the tumour would be difficult to remove safely at first, medicine may be given before surgery to shrink or control it. Chemotherapy can also be used when the cancer is found outside the fallopian tube, or if it comes back after earlier treatment. The plan depends on the tissue diagnosis, grade, spread, previous medicines, kidney and nerve health, and how well you are feeling.

Ask the gynaecological oncology team to explain whether the aim is to reduce the chance of recurrence, make surgery more effective, control active disease, or ease symptoms. Discuss the proposed drugs, how they are given, expected treatment cycles, fertility and menopause concerns, and ways to manage nausea, tiredness, infection risk, or hair changes. During treatment, contact your oncology team promptly for fever, chills, new breathlessness, uncontrolled vomiting, severe diarrhoea, confusion, or bleeding. Seek urgent help for chest pain, serious breathing difficulty, fainting, or heavy bleeding. New abdominal swelling, persistent pain, or inability to eat and drink also needs timely assessment, because these symptoms can have several causes and may need treatment.
