When is chemotherapy recommended for cancer of unknown primary?

Cancer of unknown primary means that cancer has been found, but its starting site has not been identified after initial assessment. Doctors review biopsy findings, scans, laboratory tests, and the cancer’s location and behaviour. The cells may resemble a known cancer type, allowing a treatment plan directed at that pattern. If the cancer is widespread, growing, or causing symptoms, chemotherapy can be considered to treat cancer cells throughout the body. In some situations, a focused treatment such as surgery or radiotherapy may be more suitable for a particular area.

Keep appointments for pathology review, imaging, and any additional tests recommended by the oncology team. Ask what is known about the cancer’s cell type and what remains uncertain. Before starting treatment, review the aim—controlling disease, easing symptoms, or reducing cancer before another treatment—along with the medicines, schedule, monitoring, and possible effects. Provide a complete list of medicines and tell the team about other illnesses, allergies, and previous cancer treatment.

Report worsening pain, new weakness, confusion, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, breathlessness, fever, chills, or unusual bleeding to the cancer team promptly. Sudden severe breathlessness, collapse, a seizure, or new one-sided weakness needs emergency care. The team may need to check for infection, low blood counts, pressure from a tumour, or another treatable complication.
