Short answer

Chemotherapy may be recommended for adrenal cancer that has spread, returned or cannot be fully removed, or alongside other treatment when the oncology team expects it to help.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Where chemotherapy fits

Adrenal cancer is uncommon, and treatment is tailored to the tumour and the person. Surgery is often considered when the cancer can be removed. Chemotherapy may be used when disease has spread beyond the adrenal gland, has come back, or remains after local treatment. It can be given alone or with another medicine, and the plan may also address hormones made by the tumour. Scans, blood tests, hormone tests and symptoms help the team judge treatment response.

Discussing your treatment plan

Ask whether the goal is to shrink the tumour, control growth, relieve symptoms or support another treatment. Tell the team about medicines for blood pressure, diabetes or hormone problems, as adrenal tumours and treatment can affect body chemistry. Discuss likely monitoring, infection precautions, fertility and how side effects will be managed. Keep copies of scan and pathology reports when seeking another specialist opinion.

When to seek care

Contact the oncology team for fever, persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, unusual bleeding, severe weakness, new confusion or worsening pain. Seek urgent care for severe breathlessness, collapse, chest pain, sudden severe headache or symptoms of a major hormone imbalance such as profound weakness with faintness. Use the emergency number advised by your treatment centre.

Questions for your doctor

Why is chemotherapy being considered now? Can surgery or another local treatment help? Is the tumour producing hormones? Which scans and blood tests will monitor it? What symptoms should trigger an urgent call?

Questions people ask

Is chemotherapy used for every adrenal cancer?

No. The decision depends on whether the tumour can be removed, whether it has spread or returned, tumour biology and your health.

Can adrenal cancer treatment affect hormones?

It can, particularly when the tumour makes hormones or treatment changes adrenal function, so monitoring is part of care.
