When is chemotherapy recommended for adrenal cancer?

Adrenal cancer is uncommon, and treatment is tailored to the tumour and the person. Surgery is often considered when the cancer can be removed. Chemotherapy may be used when disease has spread beyond the adrenal gland, has come back, or remains after local treatment. It can be given alone or with another medicine, and the plan may also address hormones made by the tumour. Scans, blood tests, hormone tests and symptoms help the team judge treatment response.

Ask whether the goal is to shrink the tumour, control growth, relieve symptoms or support another treatment. Tell the team about medicines for blood pressure, diabetes or hormone problems, as adrenal tumours and treatment can affect body chemistry. Discuss likely monitoring, infection precautions, fertility and how side effects will be managed. Keep copies of scan and pathology reports when seeking another specialist opinion.
