When is cervical screening test recommended for cervical ectropion?

Cervical ectropion happens when softer cells from inside the cervical canal are visible on the outer surface of the cervix. It can make the cervix look red and may cause discharge or bleeding after sex. The appearance itself is not the same as a screening result and does not replace routine screening.

A clinician may examine the cervix and consider screening if it is due, symptoms persist, or the appearance needs clarification. Screening checks for cell changes associated with cervical cancer risk; it is not a treatment for ectropion.

Check when your next cervical screening appointment is due and tell the clinician about bleeding after sex, unusual discharge, pelvic discomfort, or a previous abnormal result. Follow the appointment advice you are given, even if ectropion was already seen.

If symptoms are troublesome, a clinician can assess other causes before discussing treatment for ectropion. Avoid vaginal products that irritate you before the appointment and bring details of medicines and previous cervical tests.

Arrange a prompt assessment for bleeding between periods, bleeding after sex, new watery or blood-stained discharge, or pelvic pain. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pain, faintness, or fever with feeling very unwell.

Ask whether your screening is currently due, whether your symptoms need another examination, and whether infection or another cervical condition should be checked.
