When Is Breast Ultrasound Recommended for Duct Ectasia?

Duct ectasia, also called mammary duct ectasia, occurs when a milk duct beneath the nipple becomes widened and its contents become thicker. It may cause discharge, nipple tenderness, or a small area of inflammation. Ultrasound can show widened ducts and help distinguish duct-related changes from a cyst, solid lump, or another cause of discharge. The scan is interpreted with the pattern and colour of the discharge and the breast examination.

Arrange a review for new or ongoing nipple discharge, particularly if it comes from one breast or one duct. Note its colour, whether it appears without squeezing, and whether there is pain or a lump. Avoid repeated nipple squeezing, which can prolong discharge. Tell the clinician about breastfeeding, recent pregnancy, medicines, and previous breast surgery so the imaging plan fits your situation.

Seek prompt assessment for bloody or clear discharge that occurs without touching the nipple, a new nipple inversion, a firm persistent lump, skin dimpling, or a breast that becomes red and hot. Fever, increasing pain, or feeling unwell can point to infection and should be addressed promptly.
