When Is Breast Ultrasound Recommended for Breast Abscess?

An abscess is a pocket of infected fluid in breast tissue. Ultrasound can help distinguish a fluid-filled collection from inflamed tissue or a solid lump, and can show its position and extent. This information may help a clinician decide whether treatment needs antibiotics, a needle procedure, or another form of drainage. It can also be useful when symptoms continue despite initial treatment or when the finding is deep and difficult to assess by touch.

Arrange prompt clinical assessment for a breast swelling that is hot, red, tender, or accompanied by fever. The clinician may examine the skin and nipple, ask about breastfeeding or recent procedures, and request ultrasound. Do not squeeze or puncture the area yourself. If imaging is arranged, wear clothing that allows easy access to the breast and tell the imaging team about pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Seek urgent medical care for rapidly worsening redness or swelling, fever with chills, severe pain, marked weakness, or redness spreading across the breast. Get prompt help as well if you are breastfeeding and feel suddenly unwell, because infection can progress and may need treatment without delay.

Ask whether the scan is looking for a drainable collection, how the result will change treatment, and when you should be reassessed if symptoms do not settle.
