When is breast reconstruction recommended for breast cancer?

Your breast surgeon and reconstructive surgeon may discuss reconstruction before a mastectomy, at the same operation, after the breast has healed, or much later. The choice can depend on whether radiation or other treatment is planned, the type of breast surgery, your general health, and how you feel about additional procedures. Some people choose an implant; others use tissue from another part of the body. Reconstruction rebuilds shape, but it does not treat the cancer itself or recreate normal breast sensation.

Ask for a joint discussion early enough to compare immediate and delayed options. Bring your treatment schedule and a list of medicines and health conditions. Discuss healing, scars, possible staged procedures, changes in sensation, and how radiation could affect the plan. If you do not want reconstruction, a flat closure or an external breast form may also be discussed. A second opinion can help when the options or timing feel unclear.

Contact your surgical team promptly for a fever, worsening redness or swelling, increasing pain, fluid or blood from the wound, a wound opening, or a sudden change in the reconstructed breast. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, chest pain, fainting, or rapidly increasing swelling. These symptoms need assessment and are not a reason to wait for a routine appointment.

Ask: Will radiation or chemotherapy change the timing? Which method suits my body and treatment plan? How many operations might be needed? What changes in sensation or movement should I expect? Who should I call if healing changes at home?
