When is bone-strengthening therapy recommended for metastatic breast cancer?

Cancer cells in bone can interfere with normal bone repair and cause areas of weakness. Bone-strengthening medicines help slow this damage and may lower the chance of problems such as a fracture, the need for treatment to a weakened bone, or pressure around the spine. They can be considered when bone involvement is found on imaging, even when symptoms are limited. The medicine supports the bones but does not replace breast cancer treatment.

Your oncology team considers the extent of bone involvement, pain, fracture risk, kidney function, calcium levels, dental health, and other medicines. Treatment may be combined with hormonal, targeted, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, pain relief, and physiotherapy, depending on your situation.

Tell your team about dental pain, loose teeth, gum infection, planned dental work, kidney problems, and all medicines or supplements. Ask whether blood tests or a dental assessment are needed. Use recommended activity and lifting limits, and report a new or changing bone pain pattern. Do not delay a call because pain is mild; early assessment can help the team decide whether imaging or a change in support is needed.

Go to emergency care for sudden severe back or neck pain, new weakness or numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, inability to walk, or a suspected fracture. Contact your oncology service quickly for new jaw pain, facial swelling, exposed jawbone, or trouble swallowing. Urgent review is also needed for pain that suddenly becomes severe or is not controlled by the prescribed plan.
