When Is a Bone Density Scan Recommended After Menopause?

Short answer

A bone density scan is recommended after menopause when fracture risk needs assessment, osteoporosis is suspected, or treatment needs monitoring.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common test name

Typical measurement sites
Hip and lower spine
Main purpose
Assess bone strength and fracture risk

When is a bone density scan recommended?

Your clinician may consider the scan if you have reached menopause and have risk factors such as a previous fracture from a minor fall, low body weight, a family history of hip fracture, smoking, heavy alcohol use, or a medicine or condition that weakens bone. The timing is individual: age, medical history, fracture history, and any earlier scan all affect the decision.

What the scan tells you

A bone density scan, commonly called a DXA or DEXA scan, measures mineral density at areas such as the hip and lower spine. The result helps classify bone strength and estimate fracture risk alongside your health history. It does not show every feature of bone quality, and a scan result is not interpreted in isolation.

A repeat scan may be suggested when the result could change management, when bone loss is a concern, or when treatment response needs review. The interval depends on the starting result, risk factors, and treatment plan; repeating the test too soon may add little useful information.

How to prepare and follow up

Tell the imaging team if you may be pregnant, recently had a contrast examination, or take medicines that affect bone. Follow the centre's instructions about calcium supplements before the appointment. Wear clothing without metal fasteners when possible. The scan is usually quick and involves lying still while the machine measures selected bones.

After the result, ask how it fits with your fracture risk and whether you need changes to exercise, nutrition, fall prevention, or prescribed treatment. Do not stop an osteoporosis medicine because of a scan result without discussing it with the prescriber.

When to seek care promptly

Contact a healthcare professional promptly after a fall if you have sudden hip, back, or wrist pain, cannot put weight on a leg, or notice a new change in posture. Seek urgent help for severe pain after an injury, loss of movement, numbness, or weakness. A fracture after a minor injury may be a reason to assess bone health, even if you have never had a scan.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: What factors make a scan useful for me now? Which bones will be measured? How will the result affect my care? If I need another scan, what change or timeframe would make it worthwhile? Also ask whether any medicines, thyroid problems, digestive conditions, or recent fractures alter the interpretation.

Questions people ask

Is a bone density scan only for people with symptoms?

No. Bone thinning can be present without noticeable symptoms, so a clinician may recommend scanning based on menopause, fracture risk, medical conditions, or medicines.

How often should a bone density scan be repeated?

There is no single interval for everyone. The timing depends on the scan result, fracture risk, treatment, and whether a new result could change your care.

Can a scan diagnose a fracture?

A bone density scan assesses bone mineral density rather than investigating acute injury. New severe pain after a fall may need a separate clinical assessment and imaging.
