When is a bone density scan recommended for osteoporosis?

Short answer

A bone density scan is recommended when a clinician needs to assess low bone strength, clarify fracture risk, or monitor osteoporosis treatment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Measures
Bone mineral density, commonly at the hip and spine
Used for
Assessing bone strength and guiding fracture prevention
Preparation
Follow the imaging centre's instructions and mention relevant medicines

What the scan can show

The scan uses low-dose imaging to measure mineral density at areas such as the hip and lower spine. Results help a clinician judge whether bone density is within an expected range, reduced, or low enough to support an osteoporosis diagnosis. Testing may be considered after a fragility fracture, when medical conditions or medicines can weaken bone, or when age and other risk factors make screening appropriate.

A scan does not explain every cause of bone loss and does not predict exactly whether or when a fracture will happen. Your clinician may combine the result with your history, examination, and other tests.

How to prepare and follow up

Tell the imaging team if you could be pregnant, recently had an examination using contrast material, or take medicines and supplements that may affect the appointment. Wear comfortable clothing and follow the centre's instructions. The scan is usually brief and does not require an injection. Keep the report so future results can be compared at the same facility when possible.

Discuss the result with the clinician who requested it. Depending on the findings, the plan may include weight-bearing activity, fall prevention, nutrition advice, repeat testing, or medicine for fracture prevention. When to seek medical care

Arrange medical review after a fall or minor injury that causes new bone pain, loss of function, or suspected fracture. Seek urgent care for severe pain, an obvious deformity, inability to bear weight, numbness, or a limb that looks pale or cold. A scan is not an emergency test for sudden injury; urgent assessment comes first.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what prompted the scan, which body areas will be measured, whether any medicines affect preparation, and when you should receive the result. You can also ask whether you need blood tests, how often follow-up testing is useful, and what steps protect your bones now.

Questions people ask

Is a bone density scan the same as an ordinary X-ray?

No. It is a specialised low-dose test designed to measure bone mineral density rather than create a general image of an injury.

Will I need another scan?

Possibly. Follow-up depends on your result, treatment, age, health conditions, and changes in fracture risk.
