Short answer

A blood test is recommended when thalassaemia is suspected because of anaemia, family history, carrier screening, or an unusual blood count.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common reasons
Anaemia, family history, carrier screening, or an unusual blood count
What it assesses
Red cells, haemoglobin, and inherited haemoglobin patterns

What the blood test can show

Testing may measure red blood cells, haemoglobin, and the size and shape of blood cells. Further haemoglobin testing can look for patterns associated with thalassaemia or a carrier state. Results can also point towards iron deficiency or another explanation for anaemia, so a result is interpreted with your symptoms, history, and other tests.

A carrier state may cause no symptoms but can matter when planning a pregnancy, particularly if a partner may also carry an inherited haemoglobin change. The test does not by itself describe every aspect of thalassaemia or determine the treatment needed.

What to do before and after testing

Arrange an appointment if you have ongoing tiredness, pale skin, breathlessness with activity, a family history of thalassaemia, or a blood count that needs explanation. Tell the clinician about relatives with thalassaemia, previous anaemia, pregnancy plans, and any iron supplements. Do not start iron solely because of anaemia until iron deficiency has been assessed.

Ask how the sample will be collected and when results should be discussed. If the initial findings suggest an inherited haemoglobin condition, the clinician may recommend confirmatory testing or referral for genetic counselling.

When to seek prompt care

Seek urgent medical help for severe breathlessness at rest, chest pain, fainting, confusion, or marked weakness. These symptoms need prompt assessment regardless of whether thalassaemia is suspected. Contact a clinician soon for worsening fatigue, repeated dizziness, or breathlessness that is interfering with normal activities.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which blood tests are needed, whether iron status should be checked, whether a carrier state is possible, and whether your relatives or partner should be offered testing. You can also ask how the result could affect pregnancy planning or future care.

Questions people ask

Can a blood test confirm thalassaemia?

It can provide important evidence, but some people need additional haemoglobin or genetic testing to clarify the type.

Should I take iron before testing?

Ask a clinician to check for iron deficiency first, because iron is not a treatment for thalassaemia itself.
