Short answer

Antibiotics are recommended immediately when toxic shock syndrome is suspected, with hospital treatment to control the infection and support the body’s vital functions.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why this is an emergency

Toxic shock syndrome is a serious reaction to toxins made by bacteria. It can develop from an infection linked with the vagina, uterus, a wound, or another site. Early features may include sudden fever, vomiting or diarrhoea, muscle aches, dizziness, confusion, or a widespread rash. Doctors may take samples to look for the source, but treatment should not wait for every result. Care may include intravenous antibiotics, fluids, monitoring, and treatment of the infected site.

What to do now

Call emergency services or go to an emergency department immediately if toxic shock syndrome is possible. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint, confused, or severely unwell. Tell the team about recent surgery, childbirth, wounds, vaginal products, medicines, and allergies. If a tampon or menstrual cup is in place, tell the emergency team; do not delay urgent help while trying to manage the suspected source yourself.

Do not wait with these signs

Emergency help is needed for sudden severe illness with fever, faintness, confusion, trouble breathing, a spreading rash, repeated vomiting, very little urine, or rapidly worsening weakness. Toxic shock syndrome can progress quickly, even when the original wound or pelvic symptoms seem limited.

After emergency assessment

When you are stable, ask what source was found, how long treatment may continue, which warning signs require return to hospital, and whether wound or pelvic follow-up is needed.

Questions people ask

Can toxic shock syndrome be treated at home?

No. Suspected toxic shock syndrome needs emergency assessment and hospital treatment because the illness can affect several body systems quickly.

Will antibiotics be the only treatment?

Not necessarily. Hospital teams may also give fluids, monitor organs, and treat or drain the infection source.
