Short answer

Abdominal ultrasound is recommended when a clinician needs to assess possible pancreatitis, look for gallstones or bile-duct changes, or clarify another cause of upper abdominal pain.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Test type
Non-invasive ultrasound using sound waves
Common focus
Gallstones, bile ducts, and nearby abdominal organs

What the scan can mean

Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas, an organ behind the stomach. Ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of the upper abdomen without radiation. It may help show gallstones, widening of the bile ducts, fluid, or changes in nearby organs. These findings can help identify a possible trigger, especially when gallstones are being considered. The pancreas may be partly hidden by bowel gas, so an ultrasound may not show every detail and does not by itself confirm or exclude pancreatitis. Clinicians interpret it alongside your symptoms, examination, and blood tests.

What to do before and after the scan

Follow the imaging service's instructions. You may be asked not to eat for a period before the appointment so the gallbladder and upper abdomen are easier to view; ask whether water or regular medicines are allowed. Wear clothing that permits access to your abdomen. During the scan, gel is placed on the skin and a probe is moved across the area. Tell the sonographer if pressure is uncomfortable. Arrange follow-up so a clinician can explain the result and whether more testing or treatment is needed.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening upper-abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, difficulty breathing, a swollen abdomen, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. These signs need prompt assessment and should not wait for a routine ultrasound appointment. If pain begins suddenly after eating or spreads to the back, contact a clinician promptly, particularly when you cannot keep fluids down.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what your clinician is looking for, whether you need to fast, how your blood tests fit with the scan, and what will happen if the images are limited. You can also ask when and how you will receive the result.

Questions people ask

Can ultrasound confirm pancreatitis?

It can provide useful supporting information and identify gallstones, but pancreatitis is assessed using the full clinical picture, including symptoms and blood tests.

Do I always need an ultrasound for pancreatitis?

Not always. The need depends on the suspected cause, examination findings, blood tests, and whether another abdominal problem needs checking.
