When is abdominal ultrasound recommended for inguinal hernia?

An ultrasound can examine the groin and abdominal wall while you lie down and, when appropriate, while you stand or gently strain. This may reveal tissue moving through a weak area, even when a bulge is not present at rest. The scan can also help distinguish a hernia from a lymph node, fluid collection, or another soft-tissue finding. Many hernias are assessed clinically, so imaging is not needed in every case.

Tell the clinician when the bulge appears, whether it reduces when you lie down, and what activities bring it on. Mention pain, bowel changes, urinary symptoms, previous operations, and pregnancy if relevant. Wear clothing that allows access to the groin. Follow the imaging service's preparation instructions, which may differ from other abdominal scans.

Seek urgent care if a groin lump becomes suddenly very painful, firm, discoloured, or cannot be pushed back gently, especially with vomiting, abdominal swelling, or inability to pass stool or gas. These signs can indicate trapped or obstructed tissue and need prompt examination.

Ask whether the examination already confirms a hernia, whether dynamic ultrasound is suitable, and which symptoms should trigger urgent review while you await the result.
