The scan can show stones in the gallbladder, thickening of its wall, fluid around it, or widening of the bile ducts. It may also help assess other causes of upper abdominal pain. A normal scan does not explain every digestive symptom, and a stone seen on imaging may not be the cause of pain. Your clinician interprets the images alongside the location, timing, and pattern of your symptoms.

Check whether you should avoid food or drink before the appointment so the gallbladder can be viewed clearly. Bring details of pain episodes, nausea, vomiting, fever, and any previous scans. After the result, ask whether you need observation, blood tests, specialist review, or treatment. Do not change prescribed medicines without advice.

Seek urgent assessment for severe or persistent upper abdominal pain, fever with chills, repeated vomiting, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, or pale stools. These features can suggest inflammation or blockage and should not wait for a routine appointment.

Ask whether the scan needs fasting, whether a stone is causing your symptoms, and what follow-up is recommended if stones or bile-duct changes are found.
