What to know about transvaginal ultrasound if you prefer a female clinician

Short answer

A transvaginal ultrasound is an internal pelvic scan, and you can ask about a female clinician, a chaperone, consent and comfort before it begins.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What happens during the scan

The sonographer explains the procedure, answers questions and asks for consent. A slender covered probe is gently inserted into the vagina to obtain images of the uterus, cervix, ovaries and nearby pelvic structures. You can request an explanation before each step, tell the clinician to stop, or ask about an abdominal scan if an internal scan is not acceptable or suitable. Pressure or mild discomfort can occur, especially with tenderness, but you should report pain immediately. The scan does not involve radiation.

Arranging care that feels respectful

When booking, say that you prefer a female clinician and ask whether one is available. Ask whether a trained chaperone can be present, who will perform the scan, and whether a support person may accompany you. Wear clothing that allows easy access and follow the appointment instructions about your bladder. Tell the team about pregnancy possibility, bleeding, pelvic pain, prior difficult examinations or concerns about insertion. You remain in control of consent throughout the appointment.

When to seek advice after the scan

Mild temporary discomfort may settle, but contact the imaging service or a clinician for worsening pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, fever, fainting or unusual discharge after the examination. During the scan, ask the clinician to stop if you feel sharp pain, panic or unable to continue. An urgent assessment is appropriate for severe pain, heavy bleeding or collapse.

Questions to ask

Can a female clinician perform my scan? Will a chaperone be present? Can I bring someone with me? Is an abdominal scan an alternative? What preparation is needed? How will I receive the result?
