Short answer

During pregnancy, non-specific low back pain is managed with comfortable movement, sensible activity changes, and advice from the maternity team when symptoms change.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding back pain during pregnancy

Non-specific low back pain means the lower-back pain does not point to one clearly identified specific condition. Pregnancy can change posture, balance, joint loading and the way abdominal and back muscles work together. These changes may make standing, walking, turning in bed or lifting more uncomfortable. Pain can also be influenced by fatigue and reduced activity. This label does not explain every pregnancy-related ache, so new or unusual symptoms deserve attention from the clinician providing maternity care.

Tell your maternity team about the pain, especially if it is persistent, severe, or different from your usual pattern. They can coordinate advice with physiotherapy and check symptoms in the wider pregnancy context.

Comfort and activity strategies

Change position often, use pillows to support a comfortable sleeping position, and take short walks or gentle mobility breaks if these feel suitable. Avoid lifting that strains your back and keep objects close when carrying them. Ask before starting a new exercise programme, and use pregnancy-appropriate guidance from your maternity clinician or physiotherapist. Do not start medicines, including over-the-counter pain relief, without checking that they are suitable for your pregnancy. Pace chores and accept help when fatigue makes symptoms worse.

When to contact maternity care

Contact your maternity team promptly for back pain with vaginal bleeding, fluid leakage, regular tightening or contractions, fever, pain when urinating, or feeling significantly unwell. Seek urgent assessment for new leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness around the groin. Sudden severe pain, pain after a fall, or a marked change in the baby’s movements should also be discussed urgently with the appropriate maternity service.

Questions for your maternity clinician

Ask which positions, exercises and pain-relief options are appropriate at your stage of pregnancy. Ask whether physiotherapy would help, how to modify work or household tasks, and which changes should prompt same-day contact.

Questions people ask

Can I exercise with low back pain during pregnancy?

Gentle movement may be suitable, but ask your maternity clinician or physiotherapist to guide the type and intensity.

Is all pregnancy back pain non-specific?

No. Back pain can accompany other problems, so new, severe or unusual symptoms should be reported to maternity care.
