What to know about a mammogram if you prefer a female clinician

A mammogram uses breast X-rays to create images that a specialist reviews. During imaging, each breast is positioned and briefly compressed between plates. Compression can feel tight or uncomfortable, but tell the clinician if it is difficult to tolerate. A female radiographer or other female staff member may be available, depending on the centre and appointment schedule. You can also ask about a chaperone, privacy, and how results will be shared.

When you book, clearly say that you prefer a female clinician and ask the centre to record this request. Confirm whether a female staff member will perform the images and whether you can bring a support person. On the day, avoid deodorant, talcum powder, or lotion on the chest and underarms because these can affect the images. Wear clothing that is easy to remove from the waist up, and tell the team about pregnancy, breast implants, previous breast procedures, or earlier mammograms.

A screening appointment should not replace assessment of a new breast change. Contact a clinician promptly for a new lump, nipple discharge that is bloody or spontaneous, skin dimpling, a nipple turning inward, or a persistent change in breast shape. Ask about diagnostic imaging rather than routine screening if you have a symptom. Seek urgent care for severe breast redness with fever, rapidly worsening swelling, or feeling seriously unwell.
