What to know about carpal tunnel syndrome in office workers

Short answer
Office workers with carpal tunnel syndrome can reduce wrist strain, address night symptoms and seek assessment if numbness or weakness persists.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What is happening at the wrist
Carpal tunnel syndrome develops when the median nerve is compressed as it passes through a narrow space at the wrist. Tingling, numbness, burning or aching may affect the thumb, index finger, middle finger and part of the ring finger. Symptoms may be worse at night or during tasks that keep the wrist bent, such as typing, holding a phone or using a mouse.
Desk work is not the only possible contributor, and hand symptoms can have other causes. A clinician can examine sensation, strength and neck and arm movement to clarify the source. Read more about [Carpal Tunnel Syndrome](/conditions/carpal-tunnel-syndrome/).
Workstation and self-care steps
Keep the keyboard and mouse close enough that the shoulders can relax. Aim for a neutral wrist rather than resting the wrist on a hard edge or bending it upward. Change hand position regularly, use keyboard shortcuts when comfortable, and take brief movement breaks during long tasks. Avoid gripping a mouse tightly or leaning body weight through the palm.
A night wrist splint that keeps the wrist straight may ease symptoms for some people. Do not wear a tight support that causes more tingling, colour change or swelling. Gentle finger and wrist movement is reasonable if it does not reproduce symptoms. Treatment may need review if work changes do not help.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment when tingling or numbness keeps returning, wakes you regularly, interferes with work or affects your grip. Seek prompt care for steadily worsening numbness, new hand weakness, dropping objects or visible thinning of the thumb-side hand muscles. Sudden weakness or numbness involving an arm or face needs emergency attention. Early review helps protect nerve function and identify other causes.
Questions for your clinician
Ask which activities may be aggravating the nerve, whether a night splint is suitable, and whether you need nerve testing or another examination. Ask how to modify your keyboard and mouse setup, which exercises are appropriate, and what changes in sensation or grip should prompt an earlier review.

Questions people ask
Can typing cause carpal tunnel syndrome?
Typing can aggravate symptoms when the wrist stays bent or the hand grips tightly, but hand tingling can have several causes.
Why are symptoms worse at night?
The wrist may remain bent during sleep, which can increase pressure around the median nerve.
