What to know about an antenatal care package for expat residents

A package may bring routine pregnancy consultations together with selected blood tests, ultrasound appointments, education, and discussions about labour or caesarean birth. Some plans also describe the maternity hospital stay and postnatal review. The name alone does not confirm that every service you may need is included.

For expat residents, ask whether the provider accepts your residence and identity documents, which clinicians deliver the care, and where urgent assessment takes place. Pregnancy complications may require care outside a routine package.

Request the package details in writing before booking. Check the number and timing of appointments, tests included, exclusions, cancellation terms, access to emergency care, and how additional consultations are arranged. Share your pregnancy history, current medicines, allergies, and any previous complications at the first visit. Keep copies of results and know how to reach the maternity team.

Do not wait for a routine package appointment if you have heavy vaginal bleeding, severe or persistent abdominal pain, fluid leaking from the vagina, fainting, severe headache with vision changes, chest pain, trouble breathing, or noticeably reduced fetal movement later in pregnancy. Contact emergency services or the maternity unit according to local advice.

Ask who provides each part of care, which hospital is used, how appointments are scheduled, what happens if you move or travel, and how urgent concerns are handled. Ask for a clear explanation of services that are outside the package.
