What to Expect from Vertebroplasty for a Vertebral Compression Fracture

A specialist reviews your imaging and medical history to confirm the fracture and decide whether vertebroplasty is appropriate. During the procedure, you are positioned so the affected vertebra can be reached through the back. The skin is cleaned and numbed, and imaging guides a needle into the vertebral body before cement is delivered.

You may feel pressure while the needle is positioned. The team watches for changes in pain, sensation, and movement. Vertebroplasty stabilises the treated area; it does not rebuild lost bone strength throughout the spine or treat every cause of back pain.

Give the treating team a complete list of medicines, allergies, bleeding problems, infections, and previous reactions to sedation or contrast material. Follow instructions about eating, drinking, and medicines before the appointment, and arrange the recommended transport and support afterward.

Keep the dressing clean and follow lifting and activity instructions. Walking may be reintroduced gradually, while heavy lifting and strenuous bending may need to wait. Ask how your fracture will be protected with bone-health care, fall prevention, and follow-up imaging when indicated.

Contact the procedure team promptly for fever, increasing redness or drainage at the needle site, severe or worsening back pain, new numbness, or weakness. Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, chest pain, sudden loss of bladder or bowel control, or rapidly worsening leg symptoms.

Ask what is causing your fracture, why vertebroplasty is being considered, which alternatives fit your situation, and what improvement is realistic. Clarify the expected restrictions, warning signs, follow-up plan, and how osteoporosis or another bone-weakening condition will be addressed.
