What to Expect from Vaginal Dilator Therapy for Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause

Genitourinary syndrome of menopause can make vaginal tissue drier, thinner or more sensitive, sometimes causing discomfort with penetration. A dilator is a smooth device used for gentle, controlled stretching or to maintain comfortable access. A clinician may show you how to choose a size, position your body and relax the pelvic floor. The aim is comfort and control, not pushing through pain.

Sessions may involve lubricant, slow breathing and a short period of stillness before removal. Progression to a larger size happens only when the current size feels comfortable. Your clinician can also discuss moisturisers or other treatments when dryness or tissue changes need additional care.

Wash your hands and the device, use the recommended lubricant and choose a private, relaxed setting. Stop if you feel sharp pain, bleeding or strong muscle tightening. Clean and store the dilator as directed. Keep a simple record of comfort, dryness and any symptoms so your clinician can adjust the plan. Do not use a dilator during unexplained vaginal bleeding unless a clinician has advised you to do so.

Contact your clinician for persistent pain, new bleeding, sores, unusual discharge, burning that continues after removal or symptoms of urinary infection. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic pain, fever or feeling faint. A review can check for infection, skin conditions or a treatment plan that needs changing.
