Understanding the findings

The sample may show white blood cells, blood, bacteria, or other changes linked with irritation or infection. A culture may identify the germ and help select an appropriate antibiotic. A negative result can mean there is another cause for burning, frequency, or urgency, so your symptoms and examination still matter.

Steps that help

Wash your hands, follow the clinic’s instructions, and collect the requested part of the urine stream in the sterile container without touching its inside. Tell the clinician if you have taken antibiotics, are pregnant, have a catheter, or have recurrent symptoms. Do not self-start leftover antibiotics.
