What to expect from transvaginal ultrasound for ectopic pregnancy

The probe is placed gently in the vagina so the womb, fallopian tubes, ovaries, and nearby pelvis can be viewed closely. The scan may show a pregnancy inside the womb, an ectopic pregnancy, fluid that could represent bleeding, or no definite pregnancy yet. Blood tests and changes in pregnancy hormone levels may be used alongside the scan; an unclear scan does not by itself confirm or exclude an ectopic pregnancy.

Follow the imaging unit’s instructions about bladder preparation; a transvaginal scan commonly uses an empty bladder. You can ask for a chaperone, explain if you are sore, and request that the examination pause at any point. Bring information about the first day of your last period, pregnancy test results, pain, and bleeding so the team can interpret the findings in context.

Seek emergency care for severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, weakness, or heavy vaginal bleeding. These symptoms can signal internal bleeding. Do not wait for a routine scan if you feel suddenly unwell, even if a previous pregnancy test or scan was reassuring.

Ask whether the scan located the pregnancy, whether fluid or other findings need monitoring, and when blood tests or another scan are needed. Clarify which symptoms should take you straight to emergency care and what treatment choices would apply if an ectopic pregnancy is diagnosed.
