What to Expect from Traction Therapy for Cervical Spondylosis

Short answer
Expect a supervised neck treatment that gently separates the cervical joints to ease pressure, with the therapist adjusting force and position to your response.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How traction therapy works
Traction applies a controlled pulling force along the neck. It may be delivered by hand or with a device while you sit or lie in a supported position. The aim is to reduce loading around irritated joints and create room for movement; it does not reverse the underlying wear of cervical spondylosis.
Your physiotherapist will ask about neck pain, arm symptoms, numbness, headaches, and previous neck injuries before choosing a position. You may feel a steady stretch or mild pulling. Treatment should not cause sharp pain, increasing arm symptoms, dizziness, or new tingling.
Preparing for and responding to treatment
Wear comfortable clothing and tell the therapist about osteoporosis, inflammatory disease, recent surgery, a history of neck instability, or changes in sensation or strength. During treatment, describe what you feel rather than trying to tolerate discomfort silently.
Afterward, follow the movement and posture advice you are given. A short period of muscle soreness can occur, but worsening pain should be reported. Traction is usually considered alongside exercises that improve neck movement, shoulder control, and everyday ergonomics.
When to seek care
Stop the session and seek prompt medical advice if you develop new or worsening arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of hand coordination, or numbness that spreads. Urgent assessment is also appropriate for severe neck pain after an injury, loss of bladder or bowel control, or dizziness with fainting.
Questions for your doctor or physiotherapist
Ask whether your examination supports traction, what symptoms should improve, how progress will be assessed, and which exercises should accompany it. You can also ask what conditions would make traction unsuitable and what to do if symptoms flare after a session.

Questions people ask
Is traction suitable for everyone with cervical spondylosis?
No. Suitability depends on your examination, neurological symptoms, neck stability, medical history, and response to a trial of treatment.
Should traction hurt?
It may feel like pulling or stretching, but sharp pain, dizziness, or increasing numbness should be reported immediately.
