What to expect from topical retinoids for steroid acne

Steroid acne is an acneiform eruption associated with steroid exposure. A retinoid applied to the skin changes how pore-lining cells shed, helping reduce blocked follicles and new spots over time. It may be prescribed as a cream, gel, or lotion. The product can make treated skin feel dry, tight, flaky, or mildly stinging at first; this does not mean you should apply more.

Use a thin layer exactly as directed, usually on clean, completely dry skin, and keep it away from the eyes, lips, and broken skin. Start less often only if your clinician advises this or has given a gradual plan. Use a gentle cleanser and moisturiser, and protect exposed skin from sunlight. Do not combine it with irritating scrubs or other acne products unless your prescriber has checked the combination. Never stop or change prescribed steroids suddenly; the clinician managing them should guide any change.

Contact your prescriber if swelling, blistering, marked burning, crusting, or a spreading rash develops, or if irritation prevents normal use. Seek prompt care for facial swelling with breathing difficulty. Arrange a review if the eruption is worsening, painful, leaving scars, or not settling with the agreed plan, because another acneiform condition or ongoing steroid trigger may need assessment.
